2 mins read

Key Takeaways:

  • 25% of software developers express a desire to enhance their AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities, according to research conducted by STX Next.
  • Only 6% of developers expect to see more AI or ML tools and functionality in future versions of Python, indicating a need for better support in the development of AI and ML projects.
  • 17% of respondents see AI, ML, data engineering, and data science as the next big areas in Python, surpassing other areas like performance and software development.

Tech Professionals Seek Better Support for AI Development, STX Next Research Reveals

As the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) continues to surge, a recent study by STX Next, Europe’s largest software development company specializing in the Python programming language, sheds light on the aspirations and challenges faced by tech professionals in developing their AI and machine learning (ML) skills. The research indicates that while 25% of software developers aim to enhance their AI and ML capabilities, they encounter obstacles hindering their progress.

STX Next’s 2023 Python Tech Radar report gathered insights from a diverse range of Python developers, uncovering valuable statistics surrounding the adoption and future trajectory of AI and ML in the programming field. Among the key findings, the report reveals that 29% of developers have completed courses in AI and ML, making it the third-most popular area of training, trailing only web development (67%) and software development (65%).

Despite the notable interest and participation in AI and ML training, a mere 6% of developers anticipate an increase in AI or ML tools and functionality in future versions of Python. This discrepancy highlights the pressing need for enhanced support and resources to facilitate the execution of software developers’ current and future AI and ML projects.

The survey also disclosed additional noteworthy figures, such as:

  • 17% of respondents view AI, ML, data engineering, and data science as the next significant developments in Python, surpassing other areas like performance (15%).
  • 36% of developers remain undecided about the future trends in Python but express curiosity and eagerness to explore new avenues.
  • 25% of software developers prioritize improving their AI and ML skills, ranking behind more established areas such as software architecture (76%), software development (52%), and leadership (28%).

Ronald Binkofski, CEO at STX Next, acknowledges the current prominence of AI in public discourse and its potential to revolutionize various industries. He remarks, “Stories about AI are dominating the news schedule at the moment, with much of the debate focusing on the future of the technology and whether regulation is needed to keep its progress under control.”

Binkofski continues, “There is a strong appetite among software developers for building and growing their skills in this area, and they recognize its potential in helping them complete more innovative and ambitious projects. However, there is still some ground to make up to ensure that developers have the tools at their disposal to elevate their skills to a new level. Despite Python’s status as the go-to programming language for AI research and the practical application of ML and data science, it still has room for improvement in terms of functionality.”

In order to meet the demand for AI development, Binkofski emphasizes the necessity of implementing improved AI and ML tools in future updates to Python and other popular programming languages. While updates pertaining to performance and security remain vital, prioritizing the ease and efficiency of AI-related projects is essential moving forward.

Binkofski concludes, “On a more general level, it’s also vital that developers are given the training they need to deepen their AI and ML skills, outside of the programming process itself. If organizations emphasize holistic training for their employees in this area – covering everything from wider AI-related concepts, all the way through to the intricacies of coding for AI – they will set themselves up for a successful future.”

With technology advancing at a rapid pace, it is imperative for the industry to provide comprehensive support and resources to empower tech professionals in their pursuit of AI and ML excellence. By addressing the existing challenges and investing in continuous education, businesses can ensure that their developers possess the skills and knowledge required to thrive in the AI-driven landscape of the future.
